Stefano Benazzi is a Full Professor in Physical Anthropology, with special interest in Paleoanthropology and Osteoarchaeology. Since 2017 he coordinates an ERC consolidator grant (n. 724046 – SUCCESS), which aims to understand when modern humans arrived in Southern Europe, the biocultural processes that favoured their successful adaptation and the final cause of Neandertal extinction. He is the director of the Laboratory of Osteoarchaeology and Paleoanthropology - BONES Lab, and his research fields include the anatomical study of human remains exploiting scientific methods to understand, e.g., taxonomy, life history, and health conditions. He carries out studies that concern human evolution, and he is particularly keen to develop and apply computer-based methods for the purposes of bone reconstruction and shape analysis of skeletal remains, and dental morphometric study. He also investigates the relationship between function and morphology in human and non-human primate teeth by means of digital methods
