Professor Sabina Rashid, PhD, is currently Professor, Mushtaque Chowdhury Chair in Health and Poverty (Endowed by the late Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, Founder of BRAC) and was former Dean (2013-2023), at the BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health, BRAC University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. She is a Medical Anthropologist (BA, Masters, PhD) from the Australian National University and joined the school in 2004. Her research critiques dominant biomedical paradigms by centering lived experiences and structural factors that shape the health and lives of disadvantaged populations. She institutionalised a culture of critical, ethnographic, and participatory research within public health, with a particular focus on urban slums, adolescents, and marginalised populations. Over the last 25 years, Dr. Rashid has developed a robust qualitative research portfolio that examines how gender, poverty, urban precarity, and social exclusion affect the health and well-being of families and adolescents in Bangladesh. She founded the Centre of Excellence for Gender, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (2008) and co-founding the Centre of Excellence for Urban Equity and Health (2013) within the school. She was featured in Lancet (2025), the edited book collection, Women and Global Health Leadership (2022) and World Health Organisation Bulletin (2019) recognising her outstanding leadership in global health and development.
She was appointed Honorary Professor, International Health at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), UK, from November 2023 to 2026. In February 2025, she was appointed Senior Fellow, Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies.
She has been teaching in the international Master of Public Health programme since 2005 in three modules: i) Introduction to Public Health, ii) Anthropology and Public Health, iii) Gender, Reproductive and Sexual Health and Rights
She has approximately 100 + publications (i.e., peer-reviewed articles, international book chapters, and monographs (5600+ citations; h-index: 36).

She has secured research and capacity-building grants, approximately USD 23 million in funding to date, delivering high quality outputs, as Principal Investigator (PI) or as Co-Investigator. These grants have been from institutions such as the World Bank, WHO, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, USAID, EU, The Netherlands Embassy, UKRI, NIHR, and IDRC.
She serves on several global boards, contributing to shaping thought leadership, fostering strategic thinking, and providing critical insights into research and policy endeavours to ensure research, tools and evidence are relevant, prioritizing communities’ needs in the Global South. In early 2024, she was invited to be a Board Member of the International Scientific Advisory Board (ISAB) for Behavioural Research UK (BR-UK). In 2023, she was invited to be Co-Chair, ADLAB (Adolescent Health Learning, Action, and Benchmarking) launched by the Global Financing Facility (GFF) and the World Bank. In December 2023-2025, she joined as a Commissioner on the CHH-Lancet Commission on Health, Conflict and Forced Displacement. In 2022 was invited to the Board of Trustees at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM). She was one of the Commissioners of the Rockefeller 3D Commission (2021), and a member of WHO Social Determinants of Health, Geneva (2022-2023).
