Research Interests
• distribution, structure, biodiversity and functioning of coastal benthic communities
• benthic-pelagic coupling processes
• connectivity and resilience in benthic marine communities
• trophic and reproductive ecology of molluscs and echinoderms
• sea urchin grazing and its effects on shallow rocky shore assemblages
• aquaculture and integrated multi trophic aquaculture, echinoculture
• ecology of benthic toxic microalgae, with particular reference to Ostreopsis ovata
• ocean acidification effects on shallow temperate reef communities.
Awards
In 2005 I was awarded the Premio Felice Ippolito, from Italian Antarctic Project and the Accademia dei Lincei, because of the activities and the scientific production in the field of Antarctic Ecology.

Since 2008 I’m involved in several FP7 and other EC projects:
• 2008-2011: ENRICH (Enrichment of aquaculture systems by introduction of commercially underdeveloped marine species from different trophic levels; FP7-BSG-SME-2007-1: GA # 222492; total EC financial contribution 1.188.880 Euro, of which 273.00 Euro to my Research Unit), playing the role of Project Coordinator.
• 2008-2010: BIOCONNECTENCE (Biodiversity and connectivity in the resilience in coastal marine communities; FP7-Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowship: GA # 221065; total EC financial contribution 233.872 Euro), as scientific responsible of the Host Institution.
• 2012-2016: COCONET (Towards COast to COast NETworks of marine protected areas from the shore to the high and deep sea, coupled with sea-based wind energy potential; FP7-OCEAN.2011-4: GA # 287844; total EC financial contribution 9.000.000 Euro, of which 21.000 Euro to my Research Unit) as task leader and member of the RU CoNISMa.
• 2012-2016: IDREEM (Increasing Industrial Resource Efficiency in European Mariculture; FP7-ENV.2012.6.3-1: GA # 287844; total EC financial contribution 4.206.000 Euro, of which 327.480 Euro to my Research Unit), as PI of the RU of the Genoa University and WP leader of the Environmental Interactions WP.
• 2014-2015: RESURCH (Research & technological development to improve economic profitability and environmental Sustainability of sea Urchin farming; FP7- SME-2013-1: GA # 606042; total EC financial contribution 1.197.900 Euro, of which 167.310 Euro to my Research Unit), playing the role of Project Coordinator.
• 2014-2015: M3-HABs (Identification Number 37/2371: Risk Monitoring, Modelling and Mitigation of Benthic Harmful Algal Blooms along Mediterranean coast; ENPI-CBCMED: total EC financial contribution 1.798.254 Euro, of which 227.513 Euro to my Research Unit-CoNISMa), playing the role of Project Coordinator.
• 2016-2020: RE.LIFE (Project Number: LIFE15 NAT/IT/000771: Re-establishment of the Ribbed Limpet (Patella ferruginea) in Ligurian MPAs by restocking and controlled reproduction; LIFE 2015), Coordinatore scientifico.
• 2017-2020: ROC-POP-LIFE (Project Number: LIFE16 NAT/IT/000816: Promoting biodiversity enhancement by Restoration Of Cystoseira POPulations; LIFE 2016), UNIGE PI.
I got two financial contributions to perform research abroad:
• Funding from Fondazione CARIGE in 2001: 6 months at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology (OIMB), working with Prof. Richard Emlet on sea urchin larval ecology.
• CNR-NATO grant in 2004: 3 months in Croatia, at the Dubrovnik University, performing research on sea urchin populations spatial variabilità and on the effects of grazing on macroalgal communities.
