Dr. Roa studied medicine at the Universidad de La Frontera and specialized in Surgical Pathology at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC). He did a Fellowship in Molecular Biology at the Louisiana State University and a Master in Molecular Oncology from the CNIO in Spain. In 2010 he was promoted to Full Professor at the Universidad de La Frontera, being Director of Postgraduate Research and Director of the Molecular Pathology Laboratory, he worked as an Anatomy Pathologist for 17 years at the Hernán Henriquez Aravena Hospital in Temuco.
He joined PUC in 2012 as a Gastrointestinal Pathologist and since then he has taught undergraduate courses in Morphological Pathology in Medicine and Dentistry and in the Doctoral Programs in Medical Sciences, Applied Cellular and Molecular Biology at PUC and the University de La Frontera, respectively. He is part of the residency training program in Gastroenterology, Surgical Pathology and Medical Oncology, tutoring several doctoral students (14) and postdoctoral students (7) trained in molecular oncology.
He has led numerous research projects FONDECYT (6), FONDEQUIP (2), CORFO (2), H2020 of the European community (2) Millennium Institute as Principal Investigator and participated as associate researcher in FONDEF, FONDAP and Instituto National Cancer Institute (USA) He has published more than 295 articles in national and international journals, he has also authored 15 book chapters and 285 presentations at scientific meetings (124 international and 115 national), he was the author and editor of the chapters of gallbladder cancer and bile duct cancer of the WHO classification of digestive tumors (2019)
Dr. Roa was appointed and is to date Director of the Department of Pathology in October 2012 and is Full Professor of Pathology at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in 2015. He coordinated the creation of the Institutional Biobank of the School of Medicine that he currently directs and is also the head of the Molecular Pathology Laboratory of Gallbladder Cancer Research. Member of the national cancer commission of Chile 2021-2024
