Dr. Joan Josep Roa (Reus, 1982) is a Chemical Engineer from the University Rovira and Virgili (URV, 2000-2005) and has a Materials Engineer degree from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia-BarcelonaTech (UPC, 2005-2007). In 2007, he was awarded with a pre-doctoral FI scholarship (2007-2010) which allowed him to receive his Ph.D. degree in 2010 from the University of Barcelona (UB, 2006-2010). The research was carried out at the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy and the main topic was the study of the Micro- and nanomechanical properties of HTSC materials. During the course of the thesis, he established several collaborations both, at the national (Instituto Tecnológico de Valencia, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid), and the international level (Pelotas University in Brazil, Instituto Tecnologico de Parma). The research activity resulted in 10 papers published in SCI indexed scientific journals, two book chapters in renowned international publishers and 45 communications at different national and international congresses (22 in poster format, 22 oral communications and 1 guest presentation). At the national congress “IX National Meeting of Electroceramics 2009”, he received the Best Young Investigator award (Poster modality) for his contribution entitled “Mechanical characterization through Nanoindentation of YSZ and GDC used as electrolytes in SOFCs”. That year he was invited by Professor José Y. Pastor of the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at the Polytechnic University of Madrid to give a seminar on the mechanical characterization of advanced ceramic materials through Nanoindentation. A threemonth stay at the Phymat Institute (“Center National de la Recherche Scientifique, Université de Poitiers”) in France, under the supervision of Dr. C. Tromas allowed him to study the mechanisms of plastic deformation of ceramic materials of YBaCuO. After completing the Ph.D. he held a two-year postdoctoral stay (2010-2012) at the “Institut Pprime” in the “Center National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS, Université de Poitiers)” in France. The research carried out during this period focused mainly on two different lines. The first part of the postdoctoral stay was combined with other short stays at the Paul Scherrer Institute (Villigen, Switzerland) where he investigated the elastic deformation mechanisms induced by indentation and observed by means of synchrotron radiation as a function of the crystalline orientation for MAX phases. The second year focused on the study of mechanical properties at micro- and nanometric scale of Maraging steels. This research project was carried out jointly with the Bosch Transmission Technology Group (Tilburg, The Netherlands). In October 2012, he returned at the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, joining the CIEFMA’s research group (Center for Structural Integrity and reliability of Materials), first with a post-doctoral fellowship from UPC (12 months, 2012/2013), and later with a Juan de la Cierva contract funded by Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. Also, he was granted with another post-doctoral fellowship by the “Agència de Gestió d’Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca” (post-doctoral financial help for the temporary incorporation of junior talented research staff in Catalonian universities) which he resigned. Throughout those years, he collaborated in various projects of the national plan as well as, in three European projects and joined several projects with companies. He also established several national collaborations (Dr. Jon Molina, IMDEA), and international (École Polytechnique fédérale de Lausane, The EMPA’s institute and ETH Zurich, all of them in Switzerland, CNRS-Poitiers and CNRS-Lyon both in France, Nanomechanics INC in the United States and the University of Pelotas in Brazil). In addition, he made five stays at different research Centers (IMDEA Materials “Getafe, Spain”, Material Engineering Center Saarland “Saarbrücken, Germany”, Georgia Tech Institute “Atlanta, EEUU”, INTEMA "Mar del Plata, Argentina" and at Sain-Gobain-CREE "Cavaillon, France"). On September 2016, he was hired as tenure-track associate professor (Serra Húnter Programme) at the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia-BarcelonaTech. Currently, his research can be divided into three research themes: i) Mechanical characterization of materials at different length scales, ii) Characterization of the main deformation and damage mechanisms induced under complex stress field by using advanced characterization techniques, and iii) Rheological study of ceramic pastes to be used in 3D printing. So far, Dr. Roa has participated in 19 research projects, co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, 8 non-indexed journals, 6 book chapters and 1 book, 41 proceedings and reports. He has given 17 seminars in companies and has presented more than 141 communications, 6 of them as invited conferences.
