Ginenus Fekadu is a Visiting Fellow (under the supervision of Prof. Wai Kit Ming) in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU). His academic responsibilities span research, teaching, student supervision, and administrative duties.
He completed his Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at CityU and earned his Ph.D. in Pharmacy from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). His doctoral research, which focused on health technology assessment (HTA) for tuberculosis (TB) management across diverse settings, has attracted attention from global stakeholders, including the World Health Organization (WHO). His findings highlighted the importance of modeling approaches in selecting and implementing optimal diagnostic and treatment algorithms to support TB elimination efforts.
Ginenus’s clinical and research expertise spans pharmacotherapy, pharmacoepidemiology, health economics, and treatment outcomes of chronic diseases, with a focus on cardiovascular, metabolic, neurologic, oncologic, and infectious conditions. He employs a multimethod research approach to deliver innovative, evidence-based solutions for policymakers, clinical researchers, and healthcare professionals.
He has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications, with more than 25% as first author. He serves as a reviewer for numerous high-impact journals and is a Guest Associate Editor for Frontiers in Clinical Diabetes and Healthcare. Since August 2024, he has been appointed as a Senior Collaborator for the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study and additionally serves as an ISPOR Research Award Judge. Over 60% of his Scopus-indexed publications directly contribute to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-Being.
His contributions have been recognized through several prestigious awards and scholarships, including the Reaching Out Award, the Bright Future Leading Scientist Scholarship, ISPOR Europe 2025 Travel Grant and the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Association Gold Medal for Young Researcher of the Year (2023). He was also a recipient of the CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s Ph.D. Scholarship and the HKSAR Government Belt and Road Scholarship (2020–2023).
From 2023 to 2025, he was ranked among the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists by Stanford University. His research has been cited by various international and national policy documents and clinical guidelines, including the WHO consolidated guidelines on TB. Earlier accolades include the Wollega University Gold Medal for top graduate (2013), the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Association (EPA) Cup Award for Outstanding Pharmacy Graduate (2013), and recognition as one of Ethiopia’s top three graduates by the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (2014).
Ginenus has presented his research at major international conferences, including ISPOR 2023 in Boston, the Global Young Scientists Summit in Singapore (2023), the IV Young Scientists Congress in Russia (2024), the Foshan International Youth Talent Conference in China (2024), ID WEEK in Atlanta, GA (2025), and ISPOR Europe 2025 in Glasgow.
Before pursuing his Ph.D., Ginenus earned a Bachelor of Pharmacy from Wollega University and a Master’s in Clinical Pharmacy from Jimma University. He has over seven years of experience as a lecturer and clinical pharmacist in Ethiopia, where he was consistently recognized for teaching excellence and student mentorship. He has also supervised hospital internships for final-year pharmacy students.
Beyond academia, Ginenus is committed to social impact. He is the founder of Generation for Generation Charity (GFGC), a registered NGO in Ethiopia that has supported over 500 underprivileged children with educational, medical, and nutritional assistance over the past six years. He has actively contributed to various university committees and community engagement initiatives, including staff football clubs at CUHK and CityU.
Ginenus’s current research focuses on real-world data analysis and health economic evaluations of infectious and chronic diseases across global settings. He is committed to advancing health technology assessment frameworks, integrating diverse healthcare data, and developing predictive models to optimize clinical decision-making. Driven by a passion for lifelong learning and public health impact, his long-term goal is to shape healthcare policy through actionable evidence aligned with the GDGs, while fostering global collaborations to promote equitable and cost-effective healthcare solutions.
